Countries offering awards to Zambia in recent years have included Brunei-Darussalam, Canada, India, Malaysia, New Zealand, Trinidad and Tobago and the United Kingdom

Awards are publicised via advertisements in newspapers such as the Times of Zambia and Daily Mail, as well as ZNBC Television. The Ministry estimate that the number of applications received for awards last year was over 500 (United Kingdom and New Zealand), 250-500 (Canada, Brunei-Darussalam and Trinidad and Tobago),and 100-250 50 (India and Malaysia).

Selection is undertaken by a committee chaired by the Deputy Minister of Education, and including representatives of government departments, universities, quasi-government and private organisations. Some preference is given to applicants in the medical and technological fields.

Successful candidates are required to return and serve the country for a period at least equivalent to their period on study on completion of their awards.
